This project was a complete alteration to a 1940’s tract home situated on a beautiful site overlooking the ocean. We set out to explore the relationship of a modern beach house among the more traditional Carmel “cottages”. The incredible view and physical presence of the ocean were the main organizing elements informing the design. Towards the ocean front, a large set of transparent sliding doors open up to the new deck. The lot is long and narrow, with the narrow end facing the ocean. AS one moves from the outer deck to inside the living area and still further back to the bedrooms, the spaces are progressively more private and intimate, ultimately reaching a completely private courtyard in the rear. The aesthetic we pursued was one of simplicity and elegant detailing. The extraordinary ocean view, the spatial flow, the play of the beach light and forms result in a home of harmonic scale and proportion.
